Our lady of the Southern Cross

Paul is an accomplished and revered Australian Portrait Artist.

This piece was especially commissioned for the Catholic World Youth Day event in Sydney 2008. Rich with symbolism, this stunning and unique piece resides in the Domus Australia Chapel, Rome, Italy.

It features Mother Mary and baby Jesus in a richly Australian Context - with the Wattle Flower in Mary’s hair, enveloped by the Southern Cross in the Sky and a rural backdrop this painting embodies the “Great Southland of the Holy Spirit”. A young Mary is depicted with a gentle, humble nature - eyes fixed on Jesus as she turns her son’s body, to face us viewers directly - Jesus’ eyes piercing the viewers’ gaze. It is as if Mary has given Jesus to us, from the start.

There is a river, reminiscent of the Yarra River, meandering through the center of the landscape, symbolizing the life the Holy Spirit. Even more unique is the background astronomy - unbeknownst to the artist at the time, behind Mary is the South Celestial Pole of the Southern Cross, whereby all constellations appear to rotate around a Centrepoint - Mary & Jesus.
